Graduate student, Cornell University
DPW was really empowering for me and an overall necessary experience. DPW helped me truly believe that yes I am not only fully capable of applying to competitive grad programs like the ones at Cornell, but I am also worthy and belong in these programs as well.

Practicing interviewing with faculty was really beneficial in preparing me for not just interviews but talking to faculty in general. I always had a hard time talking to faculty, but this event really helped normalize talking to professors, which I struggled with a lot as an undergraduate.

DPW helped me get exposure to the materials I would need to generate for competitive graduate school applications. The advice and perspectives of the graduate students and faculty members who ran the workshops and information sessions was invaluable. DPW also gave me a sneak peek into what an interview weekend would look like, allowing me to pace myself during my actual grad school interviews. I would highly recommend anyone who is considering applying for graduate school to apply for DPW.

Listening to the candid experiences of graduate students allowed me to identify what kind of research environment I wanted to seek out, and what kind of environment I wanted to avoid at all costs. DPW also helped me identify what skills I needed to focus on to be a successful graduate student.

DPW is a lot of fun and a great experience! I made strong connections both to Cornell and my DPW2019 cohort. I definitely recommend DPW to anyone who wants to learn more about Cornell or graduate school in general.

DPW prepared me for grad school in several ways. First, it helped me connect with Cornell grad students who were eager to answer all of my questions about their grad school experiences. I was even assigned a mentor who helped me with my grad school application materials long after DPW was over, which was a fantastic resource. I did not have a PhD student mentor at my PUI undergrad institution, so connecting with mentors at Cornell made a huge difference in how I approached grad school applications. DPW also provided safe spaces for us to discuss our individual experiences as BIPOC researchers. This helped me connect to my cohort on a deeper level, and opened my eyes to what other students experience. It was here that I learned about ongoing efforts to make graduate school more welcoming and inclusive, which is something I hope to instill in my own graduate department. Finally, DPW provided abundant resources in the form of workshops and tours that helped me understand what my life as a graduate student would be like. Although I did not end up pursuing my PhD at Cornell, attending DPW helped me determine what to consider when choosing schools to apply to and attend.

This event was very important when I applied to graduate school. It helped me create a competitive application and left me feeling very confident when I reached out to professors I was interested in working with.

DPW helped me improve essentially every aspect of my application with the many workshops that were provided.

DPW can help answer the questions about grad school and the application process you didn't even know you had. You also have the great opportunity to practice getting to know grad students and asking them about their experiences, which is helpful when applying to any grad school.

DPW made an overwhelming process for me feel more achievable by walking me through what to expect and common do's and don'ts. I got to hear first-hand experiences from friendly grad students who genuinely wanted the best for me regardless of the schools I intended to apply to.

DPW helped demystify the graduate school application process and I greatly valued the opportunity to interact with current students and faculty. I was initially unsure about going to grad school, but after participating in DPW, I felt empowered to pursue a doctoral degree in STEM.

Anything is possible! When I was accepted into the program I literally thought it was a mistake. I just knew there was no way I was good enough for DPW. I’d like to tell those students who are interested to just go for it. You are worthy and you got this!

I didn’t actually end up applying for grad school, but generally speaking the program helped me envision what a real life grad school experience would be like. I especially liked the fact that we got so much time with the grad students enrolled and got first hand advice from other students of color. It’s such a unique opportunity that I wish more people knew about!

DPW was an incredibly informative experience. Not only did it connect me with faculty (and my future PI!), staff, and students, who shared invaluable and varied perspectives about graduate school, but it also helped me narrow down my research interests and my selection process for graduate programs and degrees. As an incoming Cornell graduate student and DPW participant, I can not recommend it enough!

Participating in DPW streamlined my graduate application process. It provided me with access to invaluable feedback on my communication skills, refining both my interviewing and writing techniques. Perhaps most importantly, however, DPW showed me that graduate education can be a place for diverse communities and voices. As a first generation college graduate and immigrant, this experience was a source of confirmation of my desire to strive for a doctorate degree.

I take every opportunity to visit Cornell and Ithaca and each time I fall more and more in love. DPW is a great way to experience Cornell firsthand and through the eyes of those who live it everyday. Apply!

DPW included many practical workshops, such as writing cover letters and how to interview. I still reference these powerpoints when applying for internships and will do so when applying to grad schools.
